- Think about all the things you regularly do before you go to sleep, or ideally all the things you would like to do before you go to sleep. Put a time next to each task so you can gauge how long your entire nightly routine might be. I’ve included some activities in this list that should be considered part of your routine.
- Choose a Start Time
- Pick a time to begin your nightly routine that allows you to complete all tasks without feeling rushed. For most people, starting about an hour before your desired bedtime works well. This gives you enough time to wind down and prepare for the next day.
- Set the Tone for Relaxation
- Begin by turning off screens, plugging in devices, turning off bright lights, and maybe doing some general tidying. This helps signal that it’s time to wind down and get ready for bed.
- Review Your Day and Plan for Tomorrow
- Take about 10-15 minutes to reflect on your day and plan the next day. What went well? What did you accomplish? What could be improved? What are you grateful for today? Then, make a plan for tomorrow. Write down your top 3 things you need to get done tomorrow. Look at your goals and make sure one of those top 3 tasks incorporates something that will advance one of your goals. Review tomorrow’s appointments and list any reminders for yourself. - Bags: Ensure your work bag, gym bag, purse, and/or your kids’ school bags are packed and ready to go. Place them by the door so you can grab them on the way out, or go ahead and put the bags in your vehicle so it’s one less thing to carry to your car in the morning.

- Personal care might include taking a bath or shower, brushing your teeth, applying skincare products, reading, or journaling.
- Create a Relaxing Bedtime Ritual
- Whether it’s reading a book, meditating, or practicing deep breathing exercises, find something that helps you relax before bed. A consistent bedtime ritual helps signal to your body that it’s time to sleep.

- You’ve heard it before- consistency truly is the key! Do everything you can to make sure you can execute your nightly routine every evening, including weekends. Your brain and body will thank you!
